Millaa Millaa Falls was in 2005 listed on the Queensland State Heritage Register.  It is truly internationally known, even being in the QANTAS “I still call Australia home” ad.  We Mamu Traditional Owners are keen for residents and visitors alike to treasure the place and respect it by knowing more its cultural associations, and have worked with the local government authority towards this.  For the 2011 Centennial anniversary the Mamu families from Millaa Millaa area and the Tablelands Regional Council worked together on signage that’s installed at the Falls, which includes welcoming visitors and letting them know that if they respect the country the country’s spirits will look in turn after them.  Many tours go and visitors take photos at the Falls – we see this iconic waterfall image everywhere, even on a Barbie doll storybook!  Visitors go swimming, even in the cold!  Grandma tells me they never went “bogey”/”ngaba-y” (swimming) there, because the story passed down is that there is “Guynggan” (spirit) there in that waterfall “binda” place.
